چکیده

We consider the problem of the evolution of the fine structure coefficient α under the assumption that the scalar field coupling to the Maxwell term satisfies the condition mt ≫ 1 for coherent dark matter oscillations. In this case we find that the coupling scale f in the leading order coupling −(φ/4f)FμνF μν affects the cosmological evolution of α according to ln(α/α0) ∝ ξ(mPl/f)× ln(tanh(t/2τ)/ tanh(t0/2τ)). A fit to the QSO observations by Murphy et al. yields f = ξ × 2.12 −0.37 × 10 mPl. Here mPl = (8πGN ) −1/2 is the reduced Planck mass, and ξ = ̺φ/̺m parametrizes the contribution of φ to the matter density in the universe.

Evidence that the fine structure constant, α = e 2 /¯ hc, was different in an early epoch has recently been found in quasar (QSO) absorption spectra. An accurate laboratory measurement of α variation could help to distinguish between space and time variation of α and possibly confirm the QSO results. We have performed calculations of the relativistic energy shifts that a variation of α would ca...

Formation of Large Structures in the Acceleration Universe with a Hybrid Expansion Law

In the current paper, we have studied the effect of dark energy on for-mation where dark energy exists in the background. For this purpose, we used both WMAP9 and Planck data to study how the radius changes with redshift in these mod-els. We used different data sets to fix the cosmological parameters to obtain a solution for a spherical region under collapse. The mechanism of structure formation f...

Evolution of the Fine Structure Constant Driven by Dark Matter and the Cosmological Constant

Bekenstein’s model of a scalar field, φ, that affects the electromagnetic permeability (usually identified with “changing α”) predicts tiny variations of the effective fine structure constant up to very high red-shifts, |α(z = 3.5)/α0− 1| < 10, when the constraints from Eötvös-Dicke-Braginsky types of experiments are imposed. We generalize this model by allowing additional couplings of φ to bot...

Improved constraints on possible variation of physical constants from H i 21 cm and molecular QSO absorption lines

QSO absorption spectra provide an extremely useful probe of possible cosmological variation in various physical constants. Comparison of H i 21 cm absorption with corresponding molecular (rotational) absorption spectra allows us to constrain variation in y ≡ α2gp where α is the fine structure constant and gp is the proton g-factor. We analyse spectra of two QSOs, PKS1413+135 and TXS 0218+357, a...

Inferring the dark matter power spectrum from the Lyman-α forest in high-resolution QSO absorption spectra

We use the LUQAS sample (Kim et al. 2004), a set of 27 high-resolution and high signal-to-noise QSO absorption spectra at a median redshift of z = 2.25, and the data from Croft et al. (2002) at a median redshift of z = 2.72, together with a large suite of high-resolution large box-size hydrodynamical simulations, to estimate the linear dark matter power spectrum on scales 0.003 s/km < k < 0.03 ...
